Social Security recipients will receive a 1.7% cost of living adjustment (COLA) starting in January 2013. This is not the lowest increase (the lowest being 0% between 2009-2010), but it is still well below the average annual increase of 4.78%. Essentially, this means that most Social Security recipients can expect to receive an extra $20 (give or take) in their monthly check.
